Review: Guardian by Emmy Chandler

I read book one after I read book two. This is a science fiction romance series set on a prison planet. It’s high stakes, very adult, and generally an incredibly fast read.

My biggest issue with this book, and probably the series as a whole, is it feels like the author walks right up to interesting critique about incarceration and private prisons then she takes huge steps backwards with the way she writes the actual people imprisoned. The logic of who is sentenced to life in prison is also a little baffling. Triple vehicular manslaughter and a stolen car are both offenses that warrant a life sentence. With such a wide group you would think this little society would be incredibly varied, but we basically have our hero’s and people who are essentially written as animals. The logic just does not follow for me.

The book itself is a really fast engaging read. I wasn’t as interested in this pair as I was in book two, I don’t think either character is fleshed out quite as much as I would have wanted but I did fly through most of the book.

I really read this book to see if we would get answers about Maci in this book that we did not get in book two, we didn’t get them, but I’m fine with having read this book. The introduction to the world was interesting, even if almost none of it was mentioned in book two. Example, I had zero clue the foliage and water were red.

I’ll probably read at least one more book in this series, it’s fast and fun and hopefully it gets better as it goes on!
