Review: Where the Drown Girls Go by Seanan McGuire
I adore this series.
This is the seventh installment in this series, and I love how the odd installment in this series weaves so much of this world together in such a short amount of time. This is Cora's story; at the onset Cora wants to go to the other school for children who went through portals in order to escape the mental torment she is going through after book five. I really really love Cora, and I thought her story did her character so much justice.
I really loved how many people this book managed to bring together. There are two big character reveals, and both made me exclaim out loud. They are two of my favorites, and one of them got to have a bit of a different role than usual, and I really enjoyed that.
This book deals with conformity, confinement, and social pressure in such an interesting way. Whenever I read one of these books I try to see what metaphorical parallels I am meant to be drawing, I don't think this is always helpful, but it is a really fun and deeply engaging mental exercise. I love how deeply these books engage with the readers; if you read these books generously and come ready to engage with the text, they will be both entertaining and really stimulating to read.
I love the way the overarching series plot is unfolding. I am so happy I started reading these books, but a little part of me wishes I found these books in 2025 so I could read all ten in one fell swoop.
I love this series; I love this installment. Cora is excellent. I am so pumped to see where we go from here.
Book eight is Antonette, nine is Kade, ten is Eleanor. I am sure about this.
