I think this probably would have been a five-star book for me if I hadn’t read it when I was so stressed. But I was so stressed and busy that I kind of didn’t connect as much to the story as I would have otherwise.
But I did really enjoy this book deeply! I loved the twists to the typical telling of Beauty and the Beast. I loved the genuine love in this book, the familial, the friendships, and well as the way this book treated romantic love. It was just jam-packed full of positive messaging and characters wanting to make each other happy.
I also enjoyed the magic of the book. Fairytale magic is always vague and controlled by rules that you have to dig a minute for but I thought Spooner handled this well. I was never confused and she did not use the common “the heroines only flaw is that she is too oblivious to save the majestic beast in time” type deal. Our Beauty had agency. And she was a badass. She was physically strong and vengeful and had hatred in her heart and it was so delicious.
It also made me cry.
I gave this book 4 stars on Goodreads and read it on March 2nd, 2018. It is July so I am clearly behind.
