By Ransom Riggs
Story before review: I was a week behind schedule and I knew what I needed to get back was a series! I have been meaning to read this book for months and I knew the second one just came out so, I read it.
So some of my favorite things in the whole story telling world are teenagers, time travel, dystopia, boarding schools, war stories, psychologists, thrillers, mysteries, fantasy (however light this maybe), and HUGE plot twists. This book combined those things in the weirdest of ways. Now it is not some of those things out right, no one would call this book a dystopian book or a boarding school book but it has some of the makings of both.
The book features old photographs all through out and they really bring the book to life in a way not even an illustration could do, because the photos are all of real people and are often outlandish they add a completely different layer to the already rich text.
The book is funny, sad, and a little scary at times but from page one I had trouble putting the book down. I finished it in two days but that was only because I started the evening of the first day and got to a point I was so tired I had to sleep! Even the beginning of the book where it was being set up were intriguing, it was the kind if book that every page is interesting. It combined the normal and the (as they call it) “peculiar.”
I cannot say enough nice things about this book and I have the second one sitting right next to me! As soon as I post this I will start reading it.
I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially those who are in a book rut and are looking for a refreshing new read!
